There
are basically 3 types of pollution. They are:
1. Water Pollution
2. Air Pollution
3. Land Pollution

Pollution
One
obvious physical effect of pollution is the result of oil spills that are caused
by ship collisions or other accidents. Oil spilled into the seas coats everything
it touches. It fouls boat hulls, pier pilings, & shore structures; spoils the
beauty of nature by killing fish & birds; & makes beaches unusable. In addition
to the physical effects, oil spills require costly cleanup operations.
Air
pollutants damage a wide variety of materials. Burning oil & coal produce sulpher
oxides, which cause steel to errode 2-4 times faster than normal. When combined
with other pollutants(soot, smoke, lead, asbestos, & so on), sulpher oxide
particulates cause corrosion to occur at an even faster rate. By themselves,
particulates damage & soil materials, structures, & equipment. Air pollutants
speed the errosion of statues & buildings, which in some instances, destroys
works of art.
The
contamination of land usually results from its commercial or industrial usage
or from the spillage or dumping of waste, including landfill. These activities
may have left elevated levels of heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and other compounds
on the land, & possibly in the groundwater. These may have the potential
to cause harm to people or to the environment. The environmental quality
team
is responsible for inspecting sites in the borough for sources of contamination.
