NE District 4-H Family Conference

We have several new volunteers, so they may not be aware of the District Conference on January 31, 2009.  This year’s conference will be at the Jenks Middle School from 12:00 until 4:00 pm.  This is a good way for volunteers to meet other volunteers from the NE District, attend helpful workshops, and get the required hours to maintain certification.  Cost is $7.00 if you register before January 16.  There are classes and fun things to do for all ages.  Okmulgee County has also had a good response to this conference and we are hoping for to get one again.

SCIENCE MUSEUM 4-H CAMP-IN

There has been such an over whelming response to the Science Camp-In at the Omniplex in Oklahoma City, we are going to have two weekends to choose from.  The theme this year is “The Night of Arghhh!!”.  I will be going February 13 and the other weekend is February 6.  We leave after school on Friday, stop some lace dinner and then arrive at the
Omniplex around 7:00 pm.  The kids have the entire place to roam, attend workshops, visit the planetarium, and see the snakes alive program.  Around midnight, they lay their sleeping bags  under a dinosaur, near the train station, or in a HUGE mouth.  We arise at 7:00 eat a light breakfast and head home.  Cost is $38.00 for 4-Hers and $25.00 for adults.  If you have a Creek Nation CDIB card, they will pay for the 4-H member.  This is open to all 4-Hers 9 years old and up.  Deadline for registration is January 23, 2009.

SHOW TIME!!!

I hope everyone that wanted to show got their animals nominated during December.  Our County Spring Show will be February 19 – 24.  Check the end of the News letter for a schedule.
If you are going to Muskogee Regional the dates are March 3-7. And the Youth Expo in Oklahoma City is March 13-23.  Good Luck to all 4-H Exhibitors.

LET’S SEW!!

It is the time of year when Ms. Naumann begins her sewing classes.  This year she wants to begin on January 18, 1:30 at the Town and Country Christian Church south of Okmulgee.  She is changing things up a little bit this year by beginning with Intermediate and Senior 4-Hers.  At this first meeting they will discuss what they are going to sew and how it will fit into a fair category.  Please call Valarie at 918-472-7249.  After the older kids get done, she will sew with the Beginners.  All of this is getting ready for the Fashion Revue/Impressive Dress and Speech contest in April.

WILDLIFE HABITAT EVALUATION PROGRAM

If you love the out of doors and would like to learn more, then this may be the 4-H program for you.  Plans are under way to begin the last of February.  This program only lasts a few months, but the rewards are outstanding.  In the past Okmulgee County has won several state championships and gone on to the Nationals.  If you have 4-Hers interested in this program, please call the office, 756-1958, and we will let you know a definite date when we will begin.

RECORD BOOKS!

Now is the time to begin those dreaded record books!  County books traditionally are due by the leader’s meeting in June.  We have all kinds medals the kids can apply for.  If they have been participating in the Dog Club, they can apply for a Dog Medal.  Shooting Sports, speeches, all kinds of livestock, gardening and much more.  State record books (or report forms) can be found on the 4-H web page and are done on-line.  They are due March 27 in our office.

2009 State 4-H Horse Topic Speech, Illustrated Presentation and Team Problem Contest

If you are a “Horse Person” we have a contest for you.  Deadline for entering is February 2.  A 4-H member may enter up to two different contests of the three categories: 1. Speech 2. Illustrated Presentations (they can be a two member team or individual) 3. Horse Topic Team Problem.  For more information you can contact the OSU Extension at 756-1958.

OKLAHOMA CITY BLAZERS GAME

If you like hockey AND would like to have the opportunity to win an Express Ranch heifer valued at $2500.00, I have a deal for you.  On Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 at the Ford Center in OKC you can attend a Blazers Hockey Game for $10.00.  At the game they will be giving away the Express Ranch Heifer, a $500 gift certificate for a show barrow; a $500 gift certificate for a show lamb and a $500 gift certificate for a show goat.  This will go to a 4-H or FFA member.  I have to order the tickets by Jan. 29, so if you are interested, please let me know.
